Ranchera Experiment
Some of the tools I've using.
Recently I've been listening to an album called "100 Classicas Rancheras" , with some famous mexican popular songs from the 40s and 50s, which later became associated to mariachi. Some incredible songs and incredible singers that many times are undervalued and left in oblivion. I started transcribing and exploring some new sounds in order to bring this repertoire back to life, with a different approach. The idea, as suggested by Jason Moran, was to use prepared piano in order to create a whole new sound system to reproduce the sonority of some of those old records. So, very soon, I'll keep you updated with my experiments mixing John Cage, Chavela Vargas and free improvisation.
